This is an EPUB version of the novella 'Bien, and the Antivirus of the Apocalypse', an entry to the larger 'Bread, and all variations of the aforementioned' series.
Genre: Fantasy, sci-fi, slice-of-life, Homestuck disease
Not precisely a horror (it is by no means scary) but tagging it more as a disclaimer for potentially triggering content (please read below).
Non-frequently Asked Questions:
- What is BreadAVOTA?
A website hosting a worldbuilding project primarily presented through a hypertext multimedia webcomic series about a sentient Doll and the End of the World.
- What is BienAVOTA?
A novella written as a blog by the primary antagonist, Bien Maldevaran, about his time in an underground bunker after a metaphysical War.
- Do I need to read BreadAVOTA to understand BienAVOTA?
Both stories are non-linear so you can read BienAVOTA before BreadAVOTA, but it is still not a standalone story outside of the larger BreadAVOTA narrative.
- Content warnings?
Mental issues, dissociation/depersonalisation, unreality, hebephrenia, ipseity disturbances, dysfunctional relationships, implied incest, force-feeding, death.
- What's with the links?
BienAVOTA's original and intended presentation is as an HTML hypertext story which you can find on the main website. [Note: You will actually have had to read up to the point of the main BreadAVOTA comic where the blog first gets posted to find the password for it]. The HTML version is superior by all accounts, but the benefits of the EPUB version is that 1) You can find all entries conveniently, as the original version has no table of contents or chronological order and you need to find all entries manually; 2) You can put it in your Sony e-reader or any other inferior reading device if you are not fortunate enough to own a Sony e-reader.
- Is there any new content in the EPUB version?
No, it is exactly the same story as the HTML version and literally the only reason I made this is to learn how to use Calibre and to load it up my brand new Sony PRS-900 e-reader, which turns out to be an old enough device that it doesn't even load all the random Unicode characters in the story. Quaint!
- Can I read this version instead of the HTML version?
Yes, but I highly recommend reading the HTML version instead. Issues with the EPUB version: no embedded audios, some colours/formatting were removed to be legible on black-and-white e-readers, interactive sections are rendered as direct plaintext, and depending on your device or software, the formatting may not appear completely as intended. Also, the story being presented as a hypertext where you need to find all the entries and don't have a strict reading order is integral to the presentation. While the 'recommended' order is just as good as any, I find it isn't as atmospheric.
As aforementioned, the main purpose of the EPUB is simply portability.
